How to Engage Your Guests and Actually Do Something Different!
We've all been to a million parties and 99.9% of them are the same: ridiculous uneventful cocktail parties with lame hors d'oeuvres, bar codes still on the vegetable platters and the baby shower complete with 10,000 gifts to open that we all think are fabulously adorable but do these soirees have to take four hours every other Saturday of our child bearing lives? There must be a better way. Below are a few alternatives that you corporate and social types can all implement to turn those snoozer-loser parties into something truly hot. Idea #1: Bingo - After my marriage, the USC Trojans became my collective second spouse. My fault, I pledged allegiance to the almighty cardinal and gold in my wedding vows. Recently I attended a "networking event" (fatalistic words) with my darling. After I got over the giant chip on my shoulder, I have to admit I was really impressed. Trojan bingo turned into one of the best ideas I've witnessed in awhile. The Goal: To get a large group (approximately 100+ people) to mingle beyond the hello-my-name-is-Joe- usual awkwardness while really enjoying themselves in a fun environment, without spending tons of money on outside entertainment. Tough. How They Pulled It Off: Upon checking in, guests were given a pencil and bingo card printed with four columns across and 5 columns down. Each box had things in it like "Had two parents who attended USC" or "Graduated after 1984" or "Graduated before 1966" or "Member of the Board of Regents" or "Speaks more than one language". You get the picture. Each guest had to write in the name of a person at the event that fit the bill. Some were easy like finding people who spoke more than one language, but finding a Board of Regents member was a little tougher. Born with a competitive streak, I zipped around that party like an Easter bunny on crack. I met more new people that night than I think I ever have. Why? Because it was fun. Even the uber-confident have trouble walking into a party by themselves and striking up a conversation more involved than "nice shrimp, hugh?" The bingo provided a networking excuse, a fun activity and actually got guests to just hang out and chat without the usual quick duck and run. This game could be adapted to any kind of event where you want people to interact. Idea #2: Spa and Beauty Stations - Who hasn't attended a bad shower? No one. This weekend we came up with a truly winning formula. The Goal: To remake an event that's a ball for the guest of honor but somewhat challenging for lots of her guests who have been there and done that with the bad frosting and stale games. How We Pulled It Off: Beauty Treatments! Swag lounges and beauty stations have been popping up at the post celebrity award shows for a while but not necessarily at the every-man's daytime event. The challenge with events (other than the most intimate dinner party), is that most guests don't know each other and so the event feels awkward. At a recent bridal shower we had several beauty stations set up for the 40 attendees. Two makeup artists provided makeovers (even those who had come with their makeup pre-done just had it wiped off and reapplied), four spa technicians were provided mini-manicures, reflexology, hand, foot and chair massages and a local physician-turned-beauty-guru was demonstrated oxygen facials and gave impromptu talks about improving your skin, plus the benefits of botox and acupuncture. I don't think I have ever seen women who didn't know each other having so much fun. Early arrivals sat right down for a manicure while they chatted with new best friends in the chairs next to them. The more daring ones got an oxygen facial and then ran over for a little lipstick and mascara. The presents got opened throughout while guests were chatting and enjoying their treatments. So, the net-net of the event? Attendees got to have a great healthy lunch, received fun swag bags to take home full of skincare and makeup samples, meet new friends AND get that much needed buff and polish. Good buy chipped and challenged, these girls were multi-tasking maniacs!
