Food Intolerances - Are They Stopping You From Having A Holiday
Depending on your food intolerance you should be able to enjoy a holiday just the same as anyone else, you just have to be more selective in your destination and your food choices. 1. Once you have made the decision to have a holiday check out hotels, cruise ships, train companies etc online. When you have a short list contact them and see if they can provide the foods you are allowed and if the chef is willing or able to do special menus for you. You can then make a choice of accommodation based on their ability to cater for you. 2. When choosing your airline follow the same procedure. Most airlines if given notice can provide special menus. If they can't, then take a picnic lunch of your own food. You will probably need a doctors note and permission before you can take this on board especially if it is an overseas flight. So make sure before hand, don't just turn up at the airport and expect them to let you through security with food and drink items. If it is strictly not allowed try an evening flight, eat well beforehand, then try and sleep through most of it. 3. Find out all about restaurants, supermarkets etc online before you go on holiday. For instance if you are gluten intolerant check out if your holiday destination has a celiac/coeliac society, contact them and see if there are restaurants serving gluten free foods and if you can also purchase gluten free foods in the local supermarkets or health food stores. 4. For whichever country you are visiting have cards written out in the appropriate language explaining your food intolerance. These can be given to waiters to be shown to the chef. He will then be able to prepare an appropriate meal or show you what is suitable on the menu. 5. Take a selection of easily eaten foods and snacks in your luggage (where countries allow it.) There is nothing worse than everyone else having something nice to eat or sitting having a drink and a snack and you have nothing you are able to eat. 6. If you can't find a suitable hotel at your chosen holiday spot try self catering . Either taking your own food or making sure you can purchase what you need locally. 7. The alternative to self catering accommodation is of course an RV. Again you can take your own food or buy locally. 8. For those who are intolerant to basically all liquids except water you can still enjoy an evening out with everyone else. A glass of water with ice and a slice of lemon (if you can tolerate it) looks no different from a glass of gin and tonic. People will be amazed at your supposed capacity for alcohol. You may not get drunk like the rest of your holiday party but you will have the pleasure of socialising, dressing up and having a good evening out. You will look no different from anyone else and you need not mention food intolerances if having to explain yourself once again is all too much for you and centers you out for unwanted attention. 9. Where possible in overseas restaurants chose the food that you want to be cooked. This is usual in some steak restaurants and fish restaurants also those with a barbeque type cooking. Also on some day cruise outings they frequently prepare a barbeque. This can be great for you as you can select your food and make sure nothing else is added. 10. Don't confuse food intolerance with food allergy. Those with a food allergy have an almost instant reaction and need immediate help and usually carry treatment with them. Food intolerance can be severe but is usually accumulative and more slow acting but never the less can ruin a holiday with pain, upset stomach, diarrhea, muscle pain, headaches, cramps etc. The onset can be minutes or hours or even days. But for those like celiacs there can be long term damage and any irritants are best avoided. By following this advice, taking the appropriate care and being cautious about what you eat you should be able to have an excellent holiday just like anyone else. It may take a little more effort but the end result should be worth it.
