Stay in a Bed and Breakfast in Shropshire When You Come to Britain
Shropshire is one the loveliest of the western counties of England. A bed and breakfast stay is one of the best ways to see the attractions and sights of this lovely area. Many bed and breakfast properties are available in all regions of the county. Shropshire also abbreviated as Salop is in the West Midlands region of England. It is one of England's most sparsely populated counties. Geography: Shropshire covers an area of 1,346?square miles and is England's largest inland county. The North Shropshire Plain is an extension of the Cheshire Plain and most of the county's large towns, and population in general, are to be found here. Shrewsbury, Oswestry, Whitchurch, Market Drayton, Newport and Telford. The River Severn is the major river in the county. The land is fertile and agriculture remains a major feature of the landscape and the economy. he area around Oswestry has an extension of the Wrexham Coalfield and there are also copper deposits on the border with Wales. The Shropshire Hills form one of England's Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and it covers about a quarter of the county. The Wrekin is one of the most famous natural landmarks in the county and once formed the centre of a Kingdom in Anglo-Saxon times. The highest hills are the Clee Hills, Stiperstones and the beautiful hills of the Long Mynd. History: ?Until the 8th century, Shropshire was part of the Welsh Kingdom of Powys but was annexed to the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Mercia by King Offa who built two huge dykes there to defend his territory against the Welsh and form the boundary between the two Kingdoms. In the 9th century, the area suffered repeated Danish invasion, and fortresses were built at Bridgnorth and Chirbury by Aethelflaed , the Lady of the Mercian. She was the daughter of King Alfred of Wessex and one of the earliest female rulers of the country. The Normans built many defensive castles across the county to defend against the Welsh and enable effective control of the region. The border with Wales was disputed until the 14th Century. Industry: Shropshire is still a very agricultural county but in recent years it has seen a large growth in the tourism and leisure sector and the natural beauty of the county draws people to all areas. Industry is mostly found in Telford, Oswestry, Whitchurch, Market Drayton and Shrewsbury, and to a lesser degree in Newport and Church Stretton. Shrewsbury is becoming a centre for distribution and warehousing and in Telford, a new rail freight facility is being built. Tourism: The Shropshire AONB and the Long Mynd are now promoted as a tourist destination and the Wrekin attracts many visitors. Farmers are being encouraged to diversify into the tourism industry and this has created a large number of bed and breakfast and self catering properties. The area is ideal for walking and cycling and is popular with hikers. Ludlow and other toens have fine castles and there are many tourist detinations in the county Accommodation is not a problem and there are a large number of Bed and Breakfast and self catering properties right across the area, although you should book well in advance if you intend to arrive in one of the more popular destinations such as Shrewsbury or Ludlow, in the busy season. These properties range in size from a single room in a house to a 10 to 12 bed establishment in a town centre. Prices also reflect the popularity of the location and can be quite high. A bed and breakfast is just that; a place to sleep where a home cooked breakfast is provided as part of the tariff. In Britain, bed and breakfast places can be found in every location and they are a lot more personal and friendly than other forms of accommodation.
