Nobody wants to start their married life in debt. But how do you go about planning a cheap reception? The reception is normally one of the biggest expenses of the whole wedding. There is plenty of scope to reduce your costs. The most obvious saving is to reduce the number of guests, but you probably don't want to do that. Next best is to do the planning yourself and enlist your guests as willing volunteers. After all, 'many hands make light work'. So, where do we begin? The venue Even a relatively cheap hotel can be costly. Most areas have local clubs and associations with meeting halls that can be hired cheaply and they will usually have some kind of catering facilities. It is worth checking in your area to see what is available. Or, even better than cheap is free. Do you know anyone with a large enough house to host the event? The catering The next major item is food. Have you considered a 'pot luck' reception. It is an idea that is making a comeback. Ask your guests if they would like to bring along a dish instead of a wedding gift. No one will want to be outdone. You might be surprised at the quality and variety of the food that turns up. And the surprise element is part of the fun. This can make for a much less formal, more relaxed occasion. The wedding cake A traditional wedding cake is normally another costly item. Why not see what your local supermarket stocks. The quality can be very good. And if you are having a tiered cake, it is becoming more common to use less expensive types of cake for the upper tiers. Chocolate chip anyone? And if you buy a plain cake, do you know a gifted amateur who could decorate it for you? Cake decorating classes have been very popular. The look and the music For this type of informal get together, the decorations don't need to be too lavish. There are plenty of ideas around for simple decorations that you and your helpers can put together without too much trouble. And forget the band or the DJ. You can easily put together a couple of compilation CDs that with keep things going with a swing. Cheap wedding receptions can be a lot of fun and not too hard to organize. The trick is to plan well ahead and to know what you need to get done. You could end up with an occasion that lives in the memory.
