Saving $1,000 in Pennies
I found a penny in the parking lot today. It was discolored and scratched up. Probably from days-upon-days of being run over by passing cars. My first thought was who wouldn't stop and pick up a penny? It's spendable cash. There's nothing wrong with it. When I got to my desk, I discussed this with a co-worker and he laughed at me. He stated that he wouldn't waste his time for such a pitiful amount. A quarter, maybe. But a penny? He'd rather just leave it there. That is, until I asked him if he would like $1000 at the end of the year. Of course. Who wouldn't? So let's do the math and see if we can't drum up one-thousand dollars evaluating everything as a series of pennies. To start off, we need to understand that one-thousand dollars in pennies is 100,000 pennies. I know that should go without saying, but I just wanted to be clear on our goal. Next, we consider items that he purchases or spends that are so small as to be non-existent in the big picture of his budget. Let's start with a can of soda. He doesn't think twice about such a tiny purchase. After all, it's only 100 pennies, right? In fact, it's such a small purchase that he can afford two purchases each work day: one in the morning, and one after lunch. Running tally: 200 pennies. He enjoys his nightly adventures into cyberspace with his video game subscription. Each day he comes in, bragging about how he donned his virtual cape and became the Great Avenger, ready to fight the worst of the worst. The game costs $15 per month. But let's rationalize it... $15 broken down across a 20-day month (each day that he actually gets to play) is 75 cents per day. See? Tiny. Almost non-existent. Running tally: 275 pennies. What about leaving the light on? Or a dripping faucet? After all, it doesn't cost much at all. Yes, it's an expense, but not a big one. Right? I did some research online to find that the cost of using a 100-watt bulb for 1 hour is about 1 cent. If we take other lights left on in the house, a leaky faucet and appliances left trickling a penny here and a penny there, we would find our houses are a huge source of penny-loss. The average house loses 120 cents per day in lost efficiency in utilities, not including lost heat and air. But let's say that my cyber-crime-fighting coworker is as frugal as I am. Let's just say that his house exerts a measly 25 cents. Running tally: 300 pennies. Finally, he buys a newspaper every day. You know how it is. He likes to keep up with his stocks and sports scores. And the funny papers. You can't forget the funnies. A paper is 50 cents. Running tally: 350 pennies. He likes to sit downstairs at the little circular table, reading his newspaper and sipping a relaxing beverage. He thinks that he is smart with his money, so he doesn't buy the $4 frappo-latto-mega-coco. Nope. He buys the plain-ol' coffee. Black. It's only 90 cents. Running tally : 440 pennies. We're still quite a long way from 100,000. Right? Actually, we've crossed that line some time ago. Assuming there are 20 work days in a month (you have to account for weekends, right?), you get the following equation: 20 days x 12 months x 440 pennies per day = 105,600 pennies per year. That is $1056. And that's assuming he doesn't spend a single cent over the weekend. After showing him his own numbers, the unnamed Great Avenger had to smile. He used his precision speed and cat-like reflexes to snatch the mangled penny from my hand. "I never thought of it that way before." As unscrupulous as our hero seemed to be, I didn't care. I believed that he would forever change his penny-wasting ways and buckle down to earning that extra $1000 per year.
